Medication Management

Medications can be an important part of the treatment plan. If psychotropic medications are appropriate, I will provide you with up-to-date evidence behind your medication regimen and will discuss any potential short- and long-term side effects, as well as how to minimize any risks involved.

My goal is to assist you in finding the most effective medication regimen that improves your health and well-being, at the lowest dose possible to minimize side effects. I always include integrative and holistic treatment approaches, which allows us to minimize the number of psychiatric medications usually needed for mental health symptom management.

Herbal & Botanical Medicine

I specialize in utilizing herbal or plant-based medicines and nutritional supplements to safely and effectively support your mental and physical health. I evaluate the safety and evidence base of any recommended nutraceuticals, and can provide customized dosages and formulations, as well as access to high-quality, professional-grade products through Fullscript.

If you are already taking supplements, I can help you optimize your regimen by making sure you are on the correct dose, the best formulations of nutraceuticals, as well as ensure there are no dangerous interactions between medications and supplements you are taking together.

Nutritional Psychiatry

Nutrition has a global influence on our health and well-being, and Gut Health research in the last two decades has highlighted its powerful effects on psychiatric symptoms. Nutrient deficiencies are well-known to produce states of depression, anxiety, fatigue, poorer motivation, and sluggish cognition. We will evaluate your dietary patterns, any food sensitivities, and gut health aspects, and create a holistic, gut-brain microbiome-supportive nutrition plan.

High quality nutraceuticals may be recommended to improve nutritional status. Micronutrient Testing can be ordered to better evaluate one’s nutritional status, as just being mindful of dietary food intake does not always correlate with adequate nutrient absorption due to various GI dysfunctions or co-occurring medications being taken.

Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, sleep, social connectedness, stress management, and substance use, play crucial roles in mental health and well-being. It is important to evaluate all your current routines and daily habits, and devise a plan to enhance your lifestyle that can support your mental and physical health goals. I understand that changing habits can be very challenging.

We work collaboratively to make small, achievable changes in lifestyle patterns that align with your personal values and goals. My goal is to support you, wherever you are in regards to lifestyle choices, in order to make feasible, lasting, and meaningful changes for you personally. Remarkably, even small lifestyle changes make substantial differences and improvements in one’s quality of life.

Functional Medicine & Psychiatry

Basic & Specialty Lab Testing

When appropriate, basic and specialty lab tests will be ordered to further evaluate potential underlying causes of mental health symptoms, such as medical conditions, hormone imbalances, or nutritional deficiencies. Examples of basic serum (blood) lab tests include an Iron Panel, Vitamin D levels, or TSH to better evaluate medical causes of depression and fatigue, such as Iron Deficiency Anemia, Vitamin D Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism.

Because I am a dual board-certified Integrative and Functional Medicine physician, I am trained in various specialty lab testing approaches, which include salivary, urinary and/or stool testing. These specialty tests can better evaluate complex hormone dysregulations, immune and inflammatory conditions, and gastrointestinal/gut disorders, all of which manifest with various psychiatric and mental health symptoms.

Genetic Testing

Research has shown the important influence of our genes on manifesting disease states, as well as ultimate treatment responses. Genetic testing can help identify biological etiologies to psychiatric symptoms, as well as guide which pharmaceuticals and/or nutraceuticals could be beneficial in alleviating these symptoms. This allows us to better personalize your treatment regimen and optimize treatment outcomes.

The Professional GX Genetic Test is designed to help clinicians optimize medication treatment decisions and choose medications more likely to be safe and effective for a patient based on their particular genetic makeup. The Neuro-Psych Genetic Test focuses on a wider array of Neurological and Psychological health components, including Neurotransmitter Production and Metabolism, Methylation Pathways, Detoxification Mechanisms, Essential Vitamin Components, Developmental and Immune/Inflammatory Genetics.

Hormone Evaluation & Management

Psychoendocrinology is the study of how our hormones or endocrinology systems affect our brain and nervous system functioning. Dysregulations of hormone levels, such as Thyroid, Cortisol or Testosterone, can produce physical, emotional and/or mental symptoms that create or exacerbate psychiatric symptoms. Many symptoms can be caused or significantly influenced by hormone imbalances, including depression, anxiety, poor attention, memory impairment, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and/or weight gain.

Unfortunately, many providers will automatically diagnosis “Depression or Anxiety” and prescribe psychiatric medications for these symptoms without an appropriate evaluation and treatment of these important components. When appropriate, an evaluation of three key hormone systems – Thyroid, Adrenal and Sex Hormones – should be evaluated and monitored to ensure full remission of mental health systems. For some patients, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is needed and I can prescribed and managed bioidentical hormones for men and women.

Gut Health Evaluation & Management

Psychogastroenterology, is the study of how the gastrointestinal and gut microbiome system affects our brain and nervous system functioning and vice-versa, and is an important part of the Integrative and Functional Medicine approach to mental health treatment.

It is well-known that the intimate Gut-Brain Connection is not only important for mental health wellness, but for many aspects of health relating to hormone regulation, inflammation, immune regulation and chronic diseases.
When appropriate, I can evaluate and manage various aspects of gut health, such as digestion, absorption of nutrients, food sensitivities, intestinal permeability, and chronic gut inflammation.

Ketamine Treatments & KAP

Ketamine has long been used safely as an anesthetic and analgesic medication, and now, often effectively for treatment of Treatment-Resistant Depression, PTSD, Suicidality, Chronic Pain, Substance Use Disorders, and other psychiatric diagnoses. Psychiatric use of Ketamine has become widespread in recent years as the newest antidepressant with its own novel pharmacological mechanism of action.

Ketamine has been administered by intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), oral, sublingual (SL), and intranasal (IN) routes. The antidepressant effect tends to be cumulative and more sustained with repeated use, and have better response rates when paired with assisted therapy, also known as Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).

Psychotherapy

I offer psychotherapy services and use an integrative therapy approach utilizing many different therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based Therapies, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Somatic-based, and Trauma-informed therapies, such as Internal Family System. Psychotherapy is an invaluable part of the treatment plan, which aims to help patients identify troubling thought patterns and reactive behaviors that are keeping you feel stuck in life.

We will work collaboratively to develop new, effective coping skills for managing distressful emotions and harmful behaviors. I am passionate about using an active, empowering approach with her patients. I provide patients with lots of psychoeducation, handouts/reading materials, and concrete tools and techniques from the wide range of therapeutic modalities to achieve neuroplasticity and positive changes.

Testimonials

I came to Dr. Shadid for depression and anxiety almost 8 years ago now and I can honestly say she is the most knowledgeable, thorough, and tenderhearted provider I’ve ever had. She makes you feel seen, heard, and loved. She recognizes you for not only your mental health struggles, but acknowledges your heart, soul, and entire experience as a human being. She does not simply or carelessly give diagnoses and medications like so many apathetic psychiatrists I’ve seen in the past have.

She truly and deeply cares for you and your well-being and her integrative and holistic approaches have been extremely beneficial for my growth and are also gloriously flipping the mental health field upside down. I’m genuinely so grateful to have found Dr. Shadid. I highly, HIGHLY recommend her. Her intelligence and deep compassion have changed my life for the better and I could not be more thankful.
